The Essential Pieces Formula
A working capsule looks something like this: 3 to 4 bottoms (a mix of casual and smart), 8 to 10 tops (different styles and formality levels), 2 to 3 layers (blazer, cardigan, jacket), 2 to 3 dresses or jumpsuits (if they suit your life), 3 to 4 pairs of shoes, 2 to 3 bags, and a few chosen accessories. Every piece should work with at least three others. If something only goes with one outfit, it doesn't earn its place.
The 3-2-1 Rule
For every three tops, keep two bottoms and one layer. This ratio gives you plenty of variety in your most visible pieces while keeping bottoms and layers practical.
Investment vs Budget Allocation
Spend on the neutrals and pieces you'll wear constantly, their low cost-per-wear earns the higher price. Save on trendy accents and seasonal bits that might not carry over to next year.
Building Outfit Formulas
Come up with 5 to 7 outfit formulas that fit your life, then fill them in with your capsule pieces. For example: 'neutral bottom + accent top + neutral layer + statement accessory', or 'tonal outfit in different textures + a pop of colour in the shoes'. Formulas take the decision fatigue out of dressing while keeping you looking intentional every time.
